Setting sail for success: highlights from the first ‘MSC Games’

28/03/2024

At MSC UK we’re passionate about cultivating interest in the shipping industry and encouraging, recognition of its vital role in the facilitation of world trade. However, according to UK government research there is a substantial lack of awareness within the younger generation, with 51% of British young people struggling to give a more precise definition of shipping beyond a simplistic notion of “anything to do with working on a boat in the water”. With this in mind, we made it our goal to engage with local educators and enlighten young minds.

Consequently, this month MSC UK proudly hosted our first-ever ‘MSC Games’ event. Welcoming four local schools, we embarked on a journey to inspire and nurture the next generation of shipping professionals. With a blend of education, engagement and, above all, fun, the day was a resounding success, leaving lasting impressions on all involved.

Providing industry insights

Kicking off with a warm welcome and introductions to the team, the day unfolded with an insightful tour of our office premises followed by a jam-packed afternoon of games and fun activities. During the tour, our various departments opened their doors to provide an insight into their roles and responsibilities within MSC. From Operations and Logistics to Customer Service, Trade, Sales and Marketing, each department shared valuable perspectives, shedding light on the multifaceted nature of our industry.

Reflecting on the event, Beth Snell, MSC UK HR apprentice enthused, “The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the array of engaging activities inspired by the world of shipping. Mini games designed to test agility, teamwork, and problem- solving skills were met with enthusiastic participation from all attendees. These interactive sessions not only educated the students, but also inspired them to explore career opportunities within the sector that they may not have known were possible”.

Igniting curiosity

Amidst the laughter and fun, valuable lessons were learned about the intricacies of logistics and shipping, the importance of collaboration and the impact of shipping on our everyday lives. As the day progressed, it was evident that the spirit of curiosity and exploration had been ignited within each participant.

Beth continued “Every activity and game were infused with maritime themes, fostering a deeper understanding of the industry in a fun and interactive manner.”

Alex Mackenzie, Project Management Apprentice, echoed this sentiment, remarking, “The MSC Games served as a platform to ignite curiosity and enthusiasm among young minds whilst showcasing the diverse opportunities available within MSC. It was exhilarating to witness the culmination of nearly a year’s worth of planning and to see the students fully engaged”.

An additional highlight was the presence of our apprentices, past and present, who served as living testaments to the opportunities within MSC UK, sharing firsthand their journeys of growth and development. Beth reflected, “As a current MSC Apprentice, being involved in this project has enriched my qualification journey. It's rewarding to share my positive experience and hopefully inspire future talent to consider MSC.”
