We consume nearly 180 million metric tonnes of sugar in the world every year. But once it was a luxury. Refined sugar was extremely rare and often called ‘white gold’. Not any more! Thanks to its use as a sweetener, flavour enhancer and a source of energy, sugar has become a staple ingredient in what we eat and drink every day.

How Sugar Should be Shipped

There are specialist measures for shipping sugar, which is a product highly sensitive to contamination. Sugar needs to be neither too dry or too wet during transportation.

Containers should be maintained at a relative humidity level of 80-85% . If sugar of any type starts to lose moisture caking can take place. Damaged sugar can be saved if refined locally. White sugar is mainly transported as breakbulk cargo in bags of woven natural material or woven plastic bags with a plastic inner bag impermeable to water.

At MSC we ensure that checks are carried out throughout journey.
If you have any questions about the services we offer for shipping sugar, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
