Sailing to Success: MSC's Remarkable Performance at Barcolana 2024

10/16/2024

MSC recently had the honour of competing in Barcolana 2024, the world’s largest regatta, held annually in Trieste, Italy. Known for its inclusive format, the regatta attracts a diverse fleet of over 2,000 boats and sailors from around the globe

MSC Sailing Team rises to the occasion

This year, MSC’s sailing team comprised employees from MSC Headquarters in Geneva who took on the challenge aboard the cutting-edge racing yacht Psaros 33. The crew—including Angelo Pietrantonio, Guillaume Rigot-Dupraz, Jean-Charles Siraudin, Francesco Guescini, Martin Thomle, Ginevra Smoquina and Nicolas Groux—delivered a fantastic result against the competition, embodying our values of passion and our family spirit.

The team achieved the best international result ever since the inception of the MSC sailing project, finishing 11th overall and securing 1st place in our category!

An impressive departure placed them ahead of a fleet of 1,756 boats, maintaining their position against maxi and super maxi yachts—some three times their size and helmed by renowned sailors including Giovanni Soldini, a former Olympian and America’s Cup competitor.

During the second leg, thanks to some skilled manoeuvres, the team increased their speed and hoisted the spinnaker, allowing them to race alongside Il Moro di Venezia–winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup in 1992 and recently awarded the Medaglia d'Oro al Valore Atletico (the ‘gold medal for athletic valour’) for significant contributions to sailing in Italy. Upon arrival, the team was met with applause from the spectators and maxi yachts, who congratulated MSC’s dedicated team of employees for delivering an exhilarating performance and closing the season on a high note.

Clients, connections and camaraderie

MSC was a proud sponsor of Barcolana 2024, with a strong presence throughout the regatta. At the heart of the Barcolana Village, our MSC Lounge served as a lively hub for over 100 clients, offering a space for direct engagement and celebration. The lounge featured a DJ set and a live performance by a talented violinist, creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere. Guests also enjoyed traditional dishes from Trieste’s cuisine and had the opportunity to connect with our sailing team. Meanwhile, the MSC Foundation hosted a special corner with engaging activities for children, including floating boat origami.

Celebrating maritime tradition and connection

The Barcolana is more than just a race; it is a celebration of maritime tradition and camaraderie, making it the perfect stage for MSC to showcase our long-standing connection to the sea.
