Captain Gianluigi Aponte is the Founder and Group Chairman of MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company SA.

Born in Sorrento, Italy, Mr Aponte started his career as a captain operating passenger ferries in the Mediterranean for his family’s business after graduating from the Italian Maritime Academy.

In 1970, following a break from the world of maritime transport to work as a banker for a number of years, Mr Aponte returned to the industry to start his own business, MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company.  Starting out with a single general cargo vessel, the MSC Patricia, Mr Aponte has developed and led the company with true entrepreneurial spirit for over four decades.  In the early days of MSC, Mr Aponte used the expression ‘where the customer goes, MSC goes’. This vision brought exponential growth in terms of both volume and fleet capacity which now serve customers all over the world. Over the past 45 years, Mr Aponte has led MSC from a one vessel operation to become the second-largest container shipping line in the world.

MSC has been built around its core family values of caring for people.  Although the company has grown rapidly over the past forty years, Mr Aponte still remains focussed on cultivating our own special ingredient which is MSC’s family spirit.

As winner of many industry awards for his contribution to the maritime industry, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the UK trade publication Containerisation International, Captain Aponte is an esteemed industry leader known for his dynamic approach and wealth of knowledge and experience in container shipping.  It is not just the maritime industry that acknowledges Mr Aponte’s achievements. In 2009, at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, he was one of the top leading Neapolitan businessmen to receive the "Neapolitan Excellence in the World" award from Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.  In 2013, Mr Aponte was awarded the “Ordine Al Merito del Lavoro” (Order of Merit for Labour) by Italian President Giorgio Napolitano.  Mr Aponte’s reputation as a successful businessman and industry contributor also earned him the prestigious “Legion d’Honneur” (Legion of Honour) accolade in March 2010 and a significant vote of confidence from French President Nicolas Sarkozy for the part he played in creating 6,000 jobs at the STX France shipyard at St Nazaire, France by placing a new vessel order.

Diego Aponte is Group President of MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company SA.

Son to Gianluigi Aponte and his wife Rafaela, Diego was raised sharing his family’s passion for the sea. After school Diego took his first steps towards his ultimate career by furthering his education in London, becoming a post graduate of Maritime Studies with a particular focus on shipping.

In 1997 Diego joined MSC, training on-board vessels as a junior engineer to gain first-hand technical experience. To increase his breadth of maritime knowledge Diego also worked in MSC Ship Management in Sorrento, gaining valuable experience of MSC’s operations.

Upon joining MSC Headquarters in Geneva, Diego worked in all departments including Latin American and USA trades, immersing himself in the day-to-day challenges and successes of the business.

In the late nineties, Diego identified an opportunity for MSC to invest in a terminal infrastructure which he believed would help to facilitate the long-term growth of the container industry.  In 2000, Diego created Terminal Investment Limited S.A. (TIL), which, under his careful management and direction has become one of the largest terminal operators in the world.  Today, Diego is the Chairman of TIL.

From 2006 Diego worked closely with his father as Vice President of the business, before being announced in 2014 as Group President and CEO of MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company SA.

Soren Toft joined MSC as Chief Executive Officer in December 2020, reporting to Group President Diego Aponte.

He oversees MSC’s global cargo businesses, including all ocean liner and logistics businesses. He will also be a member of the Board of Directors of Terminal Investment Ltd (TiL), the terminals business which is majority-owned by MSC.

Soren has over 25 years of experience in the shipping industry. Before joining MSC, he was Chief Operating Officer and a Member of the Executive Board at Maersk. Since joining Maersk in 1994, he held various leadership positions in Europe and Asia. Soren was also Chairman of Hamburg Süd, Maersk Oil Trading, Maersk Container Industry and A.P. Moller Singapore and Board Member at Maersk Line Limited.

In addition, he has served as a member of the board of World Shipping Council, the international liner shipping industry trade group, Deputy Chairman of Danish Shipping and Chairman of the Board of Young Presidents Organisation (YPO), Denmark Chapter.

Soren holds an executive MBA from IMD (International Institute for Management Development) in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Ana joined MSC in 1998 and was appointed to Spain’s Management Committee at the time of her promotion as Branch Manager in 2013.

Ana’s first job in the shipping industry was in Vigo with her family business, a reefer specialized forwarding company, which allowed her to combine her Science degree studies with her work.

In 1982, Ana moved to Leghorn to take over the Italian representation of the company and two years later she went to Las Palmas to be in charge of the Canary Islands’ office.

In 1986, Ana returned to Vigo as International Sales Manager and was appointed to the management board some time later. During her tenure in the International Division, she opened a new independent company focused on the Mediterranean, Japanese, Korean and North American markets.

In 1995 Ana furthered her career in the shipping industry opening a new company to develop the reefer transport to the Russian markets.

Because of her wide experience in the shipping industry and deep knowledge of the reefer business, Ana was invited to join MSC as Sales Manager when the company decided to open Vigo office.

At MSC, Ana is in charge of Vigo office, where she manages and develops together with her sales team the commercial activities of the company in Galicia area, offering years of valuable experience in the shipping industry.

Carlos is Branch Manager of Cadiz and Malaga in MSC (Spain) as from March of 2018.

Carlos joined MSC in 2006 as a member of the import department, where he specialized in the Far East traffic becoming Line Manager. In 2013, Carlos was promoted to Deputy Branch Manager, which allowed him to enhance his knowledge by combining the sales work in the Far East import area with the supervision of other key departments at Cadiz office.

Carlos started his career in the shipping industry in the port of Cadiz Bay in 1994 following family tradition. Before joining MSC, he developed his skills in a variety of maritime companies, such as Union Maritima Española and Mapor, where he carried out the work of civilian and military vessel consignment, container and conventional cargo stowage, and traffic and road transport manager (Farrel Lines and P&O Nedlloyd). In 2003 he moved to Madrid, where he expanded his knowledge of the sector and returned later to Cadiz as sales manager.

During this period, Carlos qualified in the services of national and international transport of merchandise, warehouse distributor, freight forwarder and auxiliary services.

At MSC, Carlos is in charge of Cadiz and Malaga offices, from where he manages and develops together with his sales team the commercial activities of the company in Andalucia area. Following his appointment as Branch Manager, Carlos recently joined the Management Committee.

Carmen joined MSC in 1996 as Sales Manager for Las Palmas office and was promoted to Branch Manager in 2009.

Carmen got a degree in Business & International Trade, followed by a master’s degree in Marketing Management.

Carmen’s career in the shipping industry started in 1994 as a Customer Service Clerk in Maersk Line, where she worked in various departments in Las Palmas and Tenerife office. Two years later, she was moved to Maersk Logistics to accomplish the setting up of the new brand in the Canary Islands.

At MSC, Carmen is in charge of Las Palmas and Tenerife offices, where she manages and develops together with her sales team the commercial activities of the company in the Canary Islands.

In addition to her responsibilities as Branch Manager, Carmen is a member of Spain’s Management Committee since its creation in 2011 and is also instrumental to the monitoring of operational activities in Las Palmas, one of MSC’s hub ports.

Carolina is Deputy Branch Manager of Valencia office in MSC (Spain) since 2016, as well as member of Spain’s Management Committee.

Carolina joined MSC in 1998 as Import Liner Assistant, combining her work in the company with her Law studies at Valencia University. In 2001 she was promoted to Import Line Manager for the Far East trade, a position she occupied for over 15 years. During that time, she was instrumental to the company’s commercial development in Spain, helping position MSC as leader in the Far East import market.

Carolina holds a Master’s degree in Ports Management & International Transport (ICADE Business School), as well as an official license for national and international road transportation of goods, freight forwarding and custom broker. Recently, she has completed her training with a top management course on business strategy and leadership at EDEM Business School.

At MSC, Carolina is key to the coordination of all the commercial activities as well as the monitoring, development and launch of strategic management projects.

Daniel holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics (Valencia University).

Daniel joined MSC in January in 2012 and was immediately appointed to Spain’s Management Committee.

Daniel’s career began in year 2000 working for an international accountancy and business consultancy company, Arthur Andersen (nowadays Deloitte), where he acquired a multidisciplinary approach and a capability to switch and adapt to different industries.

In 2006 he moved company to become a Consolidation and Reporting Manager for a Real Estate subsidiary of a national Spanish Bank Entity, where he gained experience in merger and acquisition processes.

At MSC, Daniel is instrumental to the implementation of new initiatives to improve the company’s efficiency, such as the recent migration to the SAP system, offering years of valuable business knowledge and management experience.

Francisco joined MSC in 1982 at the time of its foundation and was appointed as General Manager in 2012.

Francisco’s career began in the shipping industry in 1966 as a Water Clerk for Condeminas, where in his ten years’ tenure in the company he progressed through various roles and gained valuable business knowledge and skills. In 1976 he continued furthering his career at Lamaignere, working as shipping agent for MSC.

Because of his wide experience in the shipping industry and deep knowledge of logistics, port operations and the Spanish market, Francisco was invited to join MSC as Co-Founder and Co-Manager when the company decided to stablish in Spain in 1982.

During his first years at MSC, Francisco specialized in Operations activities and he had a key role in the opening of Terport, the terminal where MSC started their main operations in Valencia. Some years later, he also took part in the development of MSC’s own terminal in Valencia port, MSC T.V., which was finally opened in 2006.

At MSC, Francisco is instrumental to the coordination of the company’s activities in Spain leading a team of over 600 people and 14 offices.

Nacho is the Manager of MSC’s head office in Spain and is also in charge of MEDLOG, MSC’s logistics business.

Nacho’s career started in MSC as an Administration Clerk in Valencia office in 1998, combining his work in the company with his IT studies at Valencia Polytechnic University. At the moment he is finishing his MBA studies at EDEM Business School.

As a third generation of a family devoted to intermodal and logistics activities, Nacho, also holding an official license for national and international road transportation of goods, freight forwarding and custom broker, was transferred to the intermodal department in year 2000. Two years later, he moved to Madrid to develop the intermodal activities of MSC in Madrid area.

In 2012 Nacho was appointed as Deputy Manager of Valencia office and one year later he was promoted to Branch Manager, becoming a member of MSC Spain’s Management Committee as well as the Board of Directors.

At MSC, Nacho combines his responsibilities managing MSC and MEDLOG, with a leading role in technological projects at both local and worldwide level, offering years of valuable business knowledge.

Additionally, Nacho is President of the Shipping Agents’ Committee of Valencia Shipping Association, a member of the Board of Valencia’s Chamber of Commerce and the Board of Directors of Valencia’s Port Authority.

Jesus joined MSC in 2014 and was immediately appointed to Spain’s Management Committee.

Jesus holds a bachelor’s degree in Law (Universidad Autonoma de Madrid) as well as an MBA’s degree (Instituto de Empresa). Additionally, he is a member of the ROAC (Official Register of Auditors) and REA (Register of Economics Auditors).

Jesus’ career began in Madrid at Arthur Andersen (nowadays Deloitte) in 1985. In his 10 years’ tenure in the company, he achieved the position of Senior Manager in the Audit Division and was involved in the main accounts’ projects, such as Santander Bank, Repsol, Carrefour, Nabisco and SKF.

Later on, Jesus further his career working as HR & Financial Manager for 15 years for Canary Islands Tobacco Company, I D Logistics and Algeco Scotsman Group. Jesus first job in the logistics industry was with I D Logistics, where he managed service contracts with the major retail and manufacturing customers, such as Carrefour, Cortefiel and Henkel.

At MSC, Jesus is leading the implementation of new initiatives throughout the HR area, particularly the improvement of processes and procedures, recruiting, coaching and business training, offering his valuable business and management experience.

May joined MSC in 2005 as Commercial Management Assistant.

May holds a bachelor’s degree in English Philology and a Master’s degree in Translation & Interpretation (Valencia University).

May’s career started as a Sales Assistant for a small local industry producing and selling chemical products for construction. In 1996 she changed company to take a position in the Relational Marketing Department of Lladro, a Valencian multinational company manufacturer of high porcelain figurines. One year later she moved to the UK to help in the setting up of the department in the British subsidiary of the company being opened.

Upon her return to Spain, May furthered her career working for a financial boutique specialized in international M&A operations.

At MSC, May was appointed as General Manager Assistant in 2009 and is a member of Spain’s Management Committee since its creation in 2011, playing the role of Secretary of this body.

From her current position May helps transmit the mission, values and main objectives of the company both internally and externally, offering years of valuable business and management experience.

Patricia is a member of Valencia BAR’s Association and holds a bachelor’s degree in Law (Valencia University) as well as a Master’s degree in Shipping Law (ICADE Business School, Madrid).

Patricia’s career started in the shipping industry in Valencia’s Public Container Terminal in 1998, where she was involved in several quality processes.

Patricia joined MSC in 2000 coinciding with the creation of the Claims Department in MSC’s agencies network at worldwide level. She was first appointed as a regional focal point to deal with claims issues in Spain, but since then the department has evolved into a complete Claims & Legal Department due to the ever increasing tasks related to legal issues being taken over by the department.

In addition to her responsibilities as Claims & Legal Manager, since early 2016 Patricia has become a member of Spain’s Management Committee, and she is instrumental not only to the adequate management of claims and legal issues but also to the implementation of new procedures throughout the business offering years of valuable experience.

Cai-Nikolaij is a Senior Project Cargo Manager in MSC (Spain).

He started his career in the shipping industry in Hamburg, Germany, in 1989 by joining a traditional ship-owning and chartering company making his apprenticeship and becoming a shipbroker certified by the local chamber of commerce. In the following years he worked as broker in various reputable shipping companies covering the multipurpose, container, chemical tanker and dry cargo vessel markets from coaster up to panamax size, which allowed him to gain a valuable experience in the shipping and chartering business.

In 2010 Cai-Nikolaij joined F H Bertling Logistics in Hamburg as Ocean Freight Director focusing on and managing part of the group’s rapidly expanding global project and heavy lift cargo chartering activities. There he kept on strengthening his knowledge of the global project cargo markets before joining MSC Spain’s new Project Cargo Department.

As part of MSC’s global breakbulk cargo network, Cai-Nikolaij and his team are fully dedicated to the breakbulk and out-of-gauge cargoes and keen to expand MSC’s customized and personalized service portfolio offering a wealth of experience and covering all commercial and technical aspects of this specialized market.

Eva joined MSC in 1991 while she was studying Public Relations in Barcelona University to help with administration and public relations needs in Barcelona office.

In 1995, after completing her master degree in Marketing and Commercial Management (EADA Business School), she started her career in the commercial area of MSC as an Export Assistant for South Africa and Australia trades in Barcelona office.

In 1998 Eva was promoted to Export Line Manager in charge of the service to Israel and the East Med from Barcelona.

Since then, Eva has kept on furthering her expertise and knowledge in the sales department until she was finally appointed as Global Accounts Manager in 2014.

At MSC, Eva is instrumental to the implementation of new initiatives and strategies to offer a personalized attention to Global Accounts and BCOs in Spain.

Paco joined MSC in 1998 and was appointed to his current position in 2011, with responsibility for both Customs and Authorized Economic Operator areas.

Paco’s career began in the shipping industry as an Operations and Customs Clerk for Trasatlantica Spanish Line in 1987, and six years later he moved company to further his experience in these areas in Senator Lines’ shipping agent.

At MSC, Paco has been instrumental to the implementation of different key projects related to Customs and new regulations, such as the obtaining of the AEO Certificate.

Julio joined MSC in 2002 and was promoted to his current position in 2011.

Julio’s career began in the shipping industry working for a freight forwarding company in year 2000, Transnatur Valencia, where he achieved valuable knowledge on Customs, Imports, Exports and Airfreight areas.

During his first years in MSC, Julio developed his skills and career in Valencia office’s Documentation and Export Departments. Later on, he was promoted to Import Line Manager in charge of different trades, such as India & Pakistan, Africa and Latin America, which allowed him to gain valuable experience in commercial issues for over 5 years.

Since his appointment as Reefer Manager, Julio has been instrumental to the implementation of new initiatives and systems within the reefer area, which has allowed MSC to achieve significant volume increases and an outstanding position in all the major Spanish ports.

Monica joined MSC in 1990 as a trainee in Valencia office combining her job with her university studies.
Once she completed her training in the different departments, Monica joined the commercial area as an Import Assistant until 1998, when she was finally appointed as Export Line Manager in charge of the service to Israel and the East Med from Valencia.

In 2004 Monica was appointed as Crosstrade Manager at the creation of the department due to her years of valuable experience and deep knowledge of the business.
