Captain Gianluigi Aponte is the Founder and Group Chairman of MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company SA.

Born in Sorrento, Italy, Mr Aponte started his career as a captain operating passenger ferries in the Mediterranean for his family’s business after graduating from the Italian Maritime Academy.

In 1970, following a break from the world of maritime transport to work as a banker for a number of years, Mr Aponte returned to the industry to start his own business, MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company.  Starting out with a single general cargo vessel, the MSC Patricia, Mr Aponte has developed and led the company with true entrepreneurial spirit for over four decades.  In the early days of MSC, Mr Aponte used the expression ‘where the customer goes, MSC goes’. This vision brought exponential growth in terms of both volume and fleet capacity which now serve customers all over the world. Over the past 45 years, Mr Aponte has led MSC from a one vessel operation to become the second-largest container shipping line in the world.

MSC has been built around its core family values of caring for people.  Although the company has grown rapidly over the past forty years, Mr Aponte still remains focussed on cultivating our own special ingredient which is MSC’s family spirit.

As winner of many industry awards for his contribution to the maritime industry, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the UK trade publication Containerisation International, Captain Aponte is an esteemed industry leader known for his dynamic approach and wealth of knowledge and experience in container shipping.  It is not just the maritime industry that acknowledges Mr Aponte’s achievements. In 2009, at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, he was one of the top leading Neapolitan businessmen to receive the "Neapolitan Excellence in the World" award from Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.  In 2013, Mr Aponte was awarded the “Ordine Al Merito del Lavoro” (Order of Merit for Labour) by Italian President Giorgio Napolitano.  Mr Aponte’s reputation as a successful businessman and industry contributor also earned him the prestigious “Legion d’Honneur” (Legion of Honour) accolade in March 2010 and a significant vote of confidence from French President Nicolas Sarkozy for the part he played in creating 6,000 jobs at the STX France shipyard at St Nazaire, France by placing a new vessel order.

Diego Aponte, Group President and CEO

Diego Aponte is Group President and CEO of MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company SA.

Son to Gianluigi Aponte and his wife Rafaela, Diego was raised sharing his family’s passion for the sea. After school Diego took his first steps towards his ultimate career by furthering his education in London, becoming a post graduate of Maritime Studies with a particular focus on shipping.

In 1997 Diego joined MSC, training on-board vessels as a junior engineer to gain first-hand technical experience. To increase his breadth of maritime knowledge Diego also worked in MSC Ship Management in Sorrento, gaining valuable experience of MSC’s operations.

Upon joining MSC Headquarters in Geneva, Diego worked in all departments including Latin American and USA trades, immersing himself in the day-to-day challenges and successes of the business.

In the late nineties, Diego identified an opportunity for MSC to invest in a terminal infrastructure which he believed would help to facilitate the long-term growth of the container industry.  In 2000, Diego created Terminal Investment Limited S.A. (TIL), which, under his careful management and direction has become one of the largest terminal operators in the world.  Today, Diego is the Chairman of TIL.

From 2006 Diego worked closely with his father as Vice President of the business, before being announced in 2014 as Group President and CEO of MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company SA.

Sokat Shaikh is the President and Chief Executive Officer of MSC Canada. He has been at the helm of the company since 2008, transforming it into one of the leading and fastest growing container shipping companies in Canada. In addition to heading the executive team which sets the strategic direction for MSC Canada, Sokat’s portfolio also includes oversight of customer experience, revenue management, corporate strategy and business expansion.

Sokat has more than 25 years of professional experience and has previously held several senior posts in the shipping industry.

In addition to being part of the executive team at MSC Geneva, Sokat is also an active member on several Boards and Counsels that look after the growth of the Canadian economy with a strong focus on transportation. He is also member of YPO Canadian, Quebec Charter, the global leadership community of more than 29,000 chief executives in 130 countries.

Sokat holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing and International Business from Concordia University in Montreal.

Norman Tam is the Executive Vice President, Client Operations for MSC Canada.  

He is accountable for the overall Customer Experience arm of the business, ensuring that all customer touch points for cargo-in-transit are handled as smoothly and effortlessly as possible.  Norman plays a key role in in implementing world class customer centric initiatives and is single mindedly focused on brining value to our customers.  Since 2007, he has been heavily involved in overall organizational design, change management, leadership development and growth aspects of the agency, while providing strategic counsel on the direction of the business in Canada. 

Norman has more than 20 years of experience delivering technology-differentiated solutions to private, public and international customers. He served as System Development Consultant and implemented several technology solutions for MSC prior to joining the ranks of the executive team in 2007.  

Norman holds a BS in Management Information System from the John Molson School of Business in Montreal and is fluent in both English and French.

Chris Fournier is the Executive Vice President, Logistics and Operations at MSC Canada responsible for defining and executing high-level strategy for all land-based logistics and vessel/terminal operations in accordance with both local and global business objectives.

With more than 20 years of experience, Chris brings extensive high-level strategic planning and performance from both the domestic and international segments specifically in areas of trucking, rail and carrier services. Chris also brings solid proficiency in the domestic and international intermodal sectors in Canada and enjoys exceptional business acumen.

Prior to joining MSC, Chris was accountable for international sales at a Class One railroad company managing global accounts with offices in Canada, the USA and Asia. In his previous roles, Chris also held various board memberships including Member, Advisory Council to the President of the Port of Montreal, Director of St. Lawrence Economic Development Council- SODES, Director of Lanzhou Pacific Logistics Corp (China) and Director of CargoM.

Chris holds a Bachelor of Commerce, Human Resources and Finance from Concordia University and has received extensive professional development certifications.

As the Executive Vice President, Commercial Import, Najim Shaikh is responsible for redefining the supply chain model within Canada.

He joined MSC Canada in 2011 and has since been instrumental in optimizing cross-functional collaboration while at the helm of various business units including Trade, Marketing, Sales, Client Operations and Special Projects. Finding motivation in coaching, guiding and sharpening the skills and capabilities of his respective teams, Najim continues to play a pivotal role in making MSC Canada the most trusted carrier with the lead position in Canada.

A board member of the Mariners’ House, Najim has more than 20 years of professional experience in the Transportation and Logistics sector and has held several senior responsibilities in the maritime industry including positions with Hapag-Lloyd, P&O Nedlloyd and Maersk Line.

Najim holds a BSC from John Molson School of Business in Montreal and graduated in 2002. He is fluent in English and French and is also well versed in Project Management, Six Sigma and Lean Management techniques.

Anthony Della Sala is the Executive Vice President of Finance responsible for leading MSC Canada’s financial functions including growth initiatives, business support and financial analysis at MSC Canada. With a sharp focus on strategic financial management, Anthony has an innate ability for aligning financial and business metrics to support business strategies and aggressive growth strategy.

Anthony’s professional career spans over 25 years leading finance teams in global companies with significant operating scale and complexity. Prior to joining MSC Canada in 2015, Anthony was the Chief Financial Officer of Diesel Canada, subsidiary of Diesel SPA, one of the leading Italian premium fashion brand. Anthony also held several senior roles in various industries throughout his career, including Price Waterhouse Coopers and Bank of Boston (later becoming Bank of New York) in Montreal.

A graduate of McGill University (Montreal) with a Joint Honors Degree in Finance and Economics and later completed his education with a Graduate Degree in Public Accountancy (McGill University), Anthony has been a member of the order of Chartered Professional Accountants since 1994.

Darren is the Vice President responsible for overseeing the growth of the export cargo division at MSC Canada. Prior to his appointment as Vice President of Commercial Export, Darren held several senior commercial positions at MSC and was instrumental in creating the trade structure within the company, driving the growth of the reefers’ division and building the key accounts department.

Darren joined MSC in 2010 and has more than 20 years of experience across logistics, supply chain management and commerce of international trade. He is known for his strategic and dynamic approach having launched his own consultancy firm and worked in the trading industry before moving to MSC Canada.

Vincenzo Ciampi is the Vice President Commercial Sales, responsible for growing revenue and driving sales strategy and market development for MSC Canada. He reports directly to the CEO and is a member of the company’s Executive Leadership Team

Vincenzo brings to the position a successful track record of more than 25 years that includes high-profile leadership positions and recognized sales achievements in the IT and healthcare industries.

Prior to joining MSC, Vincenzo was the Executive Director, Digital, Innovation and Strategic Projects within Sandoz Canada, a Novartis Division. Other previous positions include General Manager, Strategy and Product Management, at Telus Health, Director, Strategic Projects, at CGI; Vice President, Strategy and Corporate Development as well as Vice President, External Communications and Public Affairs, at Standard Life Assurance; and Vice President, Corporate Marketing at Aon Hewitt.

Vincenzo has a passion for fund raising and has participated very actively in numerous fund-raising committees, as well as having been a board member of two charities, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada and Jovia (formerly The Foundation of Stars). He is also an active board member of the Montreal General Hospital Corporation and the General Hospital Foundation having served for more than 6 years to date. Within the scope of his board assignments he is actively involved in fund raising, financial resource allocation and audit decisions.

Vincenzo holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Marketing/International Business from McGill University and a Masters of Business Administration from École des Hautes Études Commerciales.
