Captain Gianluigi Aponte is the Founder and Group Executive Chairman of MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A.
Born in Sorrento, Italy, Mr Aponte started his career as a captain operating passenger ferries in the Mediterranean for his family’s business after graduating from the Italian Maritime Academy.
In 1970, following a break from the world of maritime transport to work as a banker for a number of years, Mr Aponte returned to the industry to start his own business, MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company. Starting out with a single general cargo vessel, the MSC Patricia, Mr Aponte has developed and led the company with true entrepreneurial spirit for over four decades. In the early days of MSC, Mr Aponte used the expression ‘where the customer goes, MSC goes’. This vision brought exponential growth in terms of both volume and fleet capacity which now serve customers all over the world. Over the past 45 years, Mr Aponte has led MSC from a one vessel operation to become the second-largest container shipping line in the world.
MSC has been built around its core family values of caring for people. Although the company has grown rapidly over the past forty years, Mr Aponte still remains focussed on cultivating our own special ingredient which is MSC’s family spirit.
As winner of many industry awards for his contribution to the maritime industry, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the UK trade publication Containerisation International, Captain Aponte is an esteemed industry leader known for his dynamic approach and wealth of knowledge and experience in container shipping. It is not just the maritime industry that acknowledges Mr Aponte’s achievements. In 2009, at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, he was one of the top leading Neapolitan businessmen to receive the "Neapolitan Excellence in the World" award from Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. In 2013, Mr Aponte was awarded the “Ordine Al Merito del Lavoro” (Order of Merit for Labour) by Italian President Giorgio Napolitano. Mr Aponte’s reputation as a successful businessman and industry contributor also earned him the prestigious “Legion d’Honneur” (Legion of Honour) accolade in March 2010 and a significant vote of confidence from French President Nicolas Sarkozy for the part he played in creating 6,000 jobs at the STX France shipyard at St Nazaire, France by placing a new vessel order.
Diego Aponte is President and CEO of MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A.
Son to Gianluigi Aponte and his wife Rafaela, Diego was raised sharing his family’s passion for the sea. After school Diego took his first steps towards his ultimate career by furthering his education in London, becoming a post graduate of Maritime Studies with a particular focus on shipping.
In 1997 Diego joined MSC, training on-board vessels as a junior engineer to gain first-hand technical experience. To increase his breadth of maritime knowledge Diego also worked in MSC Ship Management in Sorrento, gaining valuable experience of MSC’s operations.
Upon joining MSC Headquarters in Geneva, Diego worked in all departments including Latin American and USA trades, immersing himself in the day-to-day challenges and successes of the business.
In the late nineties, Diego identified an opportunity for MSC to invest in a terminal infrastructure which he believed would help to facilitate the long-term growth of the container industry. In 2000, Diego created Terminal Investment Limited S.A. (TIL), which, under his careful management and direction has become one of the largest terminal operators in the world. Today, Diego is the Chairman of TIL.
From 2006 Diego worked closely with his father as Vice President of the business, before being announced in 2014 as President and CEO of MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A.
Sokat began his career in the shipping industry with Hapag Lloyd in 1997 as a Customer Service Representative. Two years later, he was promoted to Corporate Logistics Manager where he held that position until 2001.
Sokat’s degree in Marketing and International Business was the foundation on which he started his career at MSC in 2001. As a Sales Executive, his role aligned well with MSC’s expansion plan for Canada in that same year. His drive for growth led to his promotion to Line Manager of the Latin America/South Africa/Australia trades in 2004.
Over the next four years, he developed several new trades and services for MSC in Canada. These achievements were the reason for his promotion in 2008 to Managing Director of MSC Canada.
Sokat’s passion and commitment for growth and quality has set MSC Canada apart from its competitors. His vision to be Canada’s preferred carrier continues to fuel his staff towards excellence.
Norman joined MSC in 2007 as a Software Manager, and has since undertaken many professional challenges, currently overseeing the IT, Documentation, Agency Optimization, and HR /Administration areas of the business.
He graduated from the John Molson School of Business in 2000 with a degree in Management Information Systems, and had the opportunity to work internationally as a Management Consultant in the manufacturing, financial services, health services and technology sectors.
Norman’s shipping experience began with Freight Forwarding in 2003. His involvement with MSC started shortly after, in 2005, when he was hired as an independent Systems Development Consultant to design and implement a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) System.
As a member of the Senior Management Team in Canada, Norman is constantly driving business improvements of systems, people, and processes via a results-driven management approach.
Anthony joined MSC in 2015 as Vice-President of Finance and comes with years of experience in the role.
Anthony is currently a member of the order of Chartered Professional Accountants of Quebec and has been since 1994. He graduated from McGill University (Montreal) with an Honours Degree in Finance and Economics and later complemented his education with a Graduate Diploma in Public Accountancy (McGill University).
His professional career began in Montreal in the offices of Coopers and Lybrand, a Big Eight firm which later merged to become Price Waterhouse Coopers. Moving out of public practice, Anthony joined the Bank of Boston (later becoming the Bank of New York) in a Commercial Loan Analyst role supporting and developing the growth of the company’s portfolio of accounts. In 1996, he took on a more hands-on management role as a Controller for a small fashion manufacturer and continued his progression to more senior roles in various industries. Prior to joining MSC Canada, Anthony was the Chief Financial Officer of Diesel Canada, subsidiary of Diesel SPA- a leading Italian premium fashion brand, a position he held for eight years.
Anthony’s joining the shipping industry has been exciting thus far, with the many challenges it faces. He looks forward to facing them as part of the MSC Family, both Canada and Global alike, and is eager to see the company grow and progress.
Originally from Montreal, Najim started his career as a Junior with Hapag-Lloyd in 1998. Shortly after graduating from the John Molson School of Business in 2002 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce, Najim joined P&O Nedlloyd.
Between 2003 and 2011, Najim moved between Montreal, QC, East Rutherford, NJ, and Toronto, ON, for both P&O Nedlloyd and Maersk Line. His responsibilities included Customer Service Representative, Export Manager, as well as General Manager and then Director of the Customer Service teams. During this time, Najim was also a member of several North American and Global Project initiatives and is well versed in Project Management, Six Sigma and Lean Management techniques.
Najim joined MSC in 2011 as Director of Sales. In 2012, Najim started MSC Canada’s Marketing department, and has most recently become responsible for MSC Canada’s Customer Service teams. With over 15 years of experience in the shipping industry, Najim continues to re-shape the way in which MSC Canada’s Commercial team operates and delivers value to the Canadian market.
Prior to joining MSC Canada in 2010 as a Sales Executive, Darren had already been a 10-year veteran in the shipping industry, dealing mainly in frozen produce. After first spending 7 years at Brecon Foods, an international trading house that specialized in frozen meats and produce, he branched off with his own consulting firm for those commodities and was, at the same time, trading for another company called Fresco Trading.
With all his experience in logistics, supply chain management and commerce of international trade, he quickly rose up the ranks to take on manager roles, going from Sales Manager to Trade Manager before being promoted to Vice-President of Commercial Export.
Starting his career at MSC Lebanon in 2003-2011 as Logistics Assistant Manager, Maroun also held various management titles; more specifically, Line Manager (2011-2014) and Trade Manager (2014-2015) here at MSC Canada. The following year, Maroun accepted a new challenge to help manage the sales team back at MSC Lebanon, before coming back to MSC Canada near the end of 2016 to be appointed as Vice President – Export Client Services.
Holding both a B.S. Computer Science (2006), and CIFFA certification (2008), Maroun brings extensive MSC commercial experience, not only from the sales and liner areas of the business, but also possesses customer service experience having worked as part of the team here at MSC Canada in 2011.
Through his in-depth understanding of our business from various perspectives, and his client-service oriented approach, Maroun will not only further emphasize and redefine our customer - service model; but as well lead MSC Canada to steer our Export Client Service areas to the next level.
Chris began his career outside of the shipping industry, in both the insurance and mobile telecommunication fields, before joining MSC in 1999 as a Junior on the Logistics team.
His time spent in other industries, along with his prior successful completion of studies in the Business Administration field, began the foundation for his Logistics career. By 2005, he started to take on managerial roles within the department, most notably, Equipment Assistant Manager and Logistics Assistant Manager. In 2010, Chris became the Logistics Manager, and in the next 5 years, initiated and implemented multiple changes to Logistics side, which improved synergies and efficiencies with suppliers, and increased cost savings for the organization.
In 2015, Chris started up the new Asset Management department, focusing mainly on the improved efficiency, maximization and utilization of the organization’s assets. After only two months of managing this new team, he was appointed to Vice President of Logistics.
Along with the more than 16 years of shipping experience and industry knowledge that Chris brings, it is his desire and persistence, which continue to be the biggest factors that keep evolving and driving his team forward to optimal business performance.
Robert was appointed Director Logistics & Operations in January of 2009. Prior to holding this role, Robert started in the role of Sales Executive when he joined MSC Canada in April of 2004, and was promoted to Manager of Operations in 2008.
Prior to joining MSC Canada, Robert began his shipping career in freight forwarding in 1999. He brings more than 15 years of shipping experience and has successfully championed strategic process and system changes to maximize operational performance.
Rajeev Saxena is Branch Manager – Vancouver.
Rajeev possesses over 23 years in Logistics and Supply Chain Management within the maritime industry, and 10 years with the Indian Navy (Logistics branch), having retired as Lieutenant Commander.
He has worked extensively over the last 13 years in various capacities and agencies within MSC, first at MSC Dubai as Manager & Line Manager – Far/Middle East from 2004-10 before joining MSC Canada. At MSC Canada, he worked as Line Manager for Relay Ports between 2010 -11 and most recently as Vancouver Regional Sales Manager from 2011-17.
Rajeev was appointed as Branch Manager – Vancouver in March 2017. He holds an MBA in International Marketing and Materials Management, an M.A. of Economics/Statistics, and is a Certified Supply Chain Professional.
As Branch Manager for MSC's Vancouver office, Rajeev is the main touchpoint for all service requests on the Canadian West Coast, ensuring that the customer service offered by the Vancouver team is second to none.
Steve began his career in the shipping industry with Atlantic Container Lines in 1976 in their Computer and Communication Departments. He was promoted to Manager 3 years later and worked on ensuring ACL was always at the forefront of Information Technology.
In 1993, Steve started a new career path when he began working for ABC Container Line & Seabridge International, where he was their Sales Executive. His understanding of the Canadian market enabled him to develop strong relationships with clients. This resulted in Steve going over to Hapag Lloyd in the same capacity in 1996. During his 5 years at Hapag, he re-organized the Customer Service teams across Canada and looked to the future for more challenges.
His career at MSC started in 2002 as Line Manager of the Europe/Mediterranean and Relay trades. Demonstrating his commitment to MSC and to the Canadian Market, Steve was subsequently promoted to his current position as Director Liners.
Joining MSC in early 2015, Rasha began her career in our organization as a Customer Service Representative, and quickly exceeded within this role to VIP Executive within the same year. Holding a Bachelor of Arts, Psychology (McGill), a Graduate Diploma in Human Resources Management (McGill) with ongoing studies in Finance, Accounting and Supply Chain Management, Rasha takes on the VIP Manager role with full credentials.
Prior to joining MSC, Rasha had accomplished a 10-year experience within the manufacturing and distribution sector. Starting at Customer Service, Rasha attained various managerial roles within the Supply Chain, and gained extensive experience in the workings of Inventory Management, Purchasing, as well as Logistics and Transportation.
Coming on board MSC as an Export Booking Coordinator in 2013, it only took Ayesha two years before she was named a Trade Assistant. Considering that this is her first time working in the shipping industry, this notable accomplishment, which she held for a year, was quickly overcome with yet another promotion, the one to her current role as a Reefer Cargo Specialist.
With an educational background in Social Studies and Applied Marketing, Ayesha’s devotion to the shipping industry cannot be undermined and her successes at MSC prove that she continues to strive for excellence, both a benefit to her team and her clients.
Lineda Madouni graduated from the University of Sciences and Technology in Oran, Algeria, as a Computer Science Engineer in 1998.
She joined MSC Algeria in 2000 as a member of the Equipment department and quickly exceeded her role, becoming the department’s Manager for 6 years.
Lineda then transferred to the IT department to develop software and applications for MSC Algeria’s multiple departments for 10 years before being promoted to Deputy Manager in 2015.
In fall of 2016, she joined MSC Canada’s family as a Reefer Cargo Specialist and, to this day, pursues her professional journey within MSC’s global network.
