Captain Gianluigi Aponte is the Founder and Group Executive Chairman of MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A.
Born in Sorrento, Italy, Mr Aponte started his career as a captain operating passenger ferries in the Mediterranean for his family’s business after graduating from the Italian Maritime Academy.
In 1970, following a break from the world of maritime transport to work as a banker for a number of years, Mr Aponte returned to the industry to start his own business, MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company. Starting out with a single general cargo vessel, the MSC Patricia, Mr Aponte has developed and led the company with true entrepreneurial spirit for over four decades. In the early days of MSC, Mr Aponte used the expression ‘where the customer goes, MSC goes’. This vision brought exponential growth in terms of both volume and fleet capacity which now serve customers all over the world. Over the past 45 years, Mr Aponte has led MSC from a one vessel operation to become the second-largest container shipping line in the world.
MSC has been built around its core family values of caring for people. Although the company has grown rapidly over the past forty years, Mr Aponte still remains focussed on cultivating our own special ingredient which is MSC’s family spirit.
As winner of many industry awards for his contribution to the maritime industry, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the UK trade publication Containerisation International, Captain Aponte is an esteemed industry leader known for his dynamic approach and wealth of knowledge and experience in container shipping. It is not just the maritime industry that acknowledges Mr Aponte’s achievements. In 2009, at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, he was one of the top leading Neapolitan businessmen to receive the "Neapolitan Excellence in the World" award from Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. In 2013, Mr Aponte was awarded the “Ordine Al Merito del Lavoro” (Order of Merit for Labour) by Italian President Giorgio Napolitano. Mr Aponte’s reputation as a successful businessman and industry contributor also earned him the prestigious “Legion d’Honneur” (Legion of Honour) accolade in March 2010 and a significant vote of confidence from French President Nicolas Sarkozy for the part he played in creating 6,000 jobs at the STX France shipyard at St Nazaire, France by placing a new vessel order.
Diego Aponte is President and CEO of MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A.
Son to Gianluigi Aponte and his wife Rafaela, Diego was raised sharing his family’s passion for the sea. After school Diego took his first steps towards his ultimate career by furthering his education in London, becoming a post graduate of Maritime Studies with a particular focus on shipping.
In 1997 Diego joined MSC, training on-board vessels as a junior engineer to gain first-hand technical experience. To increase his breadth of maritime knowledge Diego also worked in MSC Ship Management in Sorrento, gaining valuable experience of MSC’s operations.
Upon joining MSC Headquarters in Geneva, Diego worked in all departments including Latin American and USA trades, immersing himself in the day-to-day challenges and successes of the business.
In the late nineties, Diego identified an opportunity for MSC to invest in a terminal infrastructure which he believed would help to facilitate the long-term growth of the container industry. In 2000, Diego created Terminal Investment Limited S.A. (TIL), which, under his careful management and direction has become one of the largest terminal operators in the world. Today, Diego is the Chairman of TIL.
From 2006 Diego worked closely with his father as Vice President of the business, before being announced in 2014 as President and CEO of MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A.
Alexander Schulz started his career at MSC Germany in 2005 as an apprenticeship working as shipping salesman, position which he occupied until 2008.
Then he took over the commercial coordination of the sales south – West Germany. In 2011, he started working at Sales for Latin America Export Department in Hamburg. Later that year he came to MSC Brazil and became working as an NVOCC Analyst.
In 2014 he was coordinating the NVOCC Department in Brazil and a year later he was promoted Import Trade Deputy Manager for Europe and Relay. He’s now in charge of these trades, focused on customer’s needs, following economic scenario and competition moves, and supporting agents abroad and Geneva Liners to offer a high level service to the import clients.
Alex has a major in Logistics and Supply Chain Management by the International School of Trading and Logistics of Bremen. He also has a degree in Economics by the London Business School.
Celso joined MSC in 1998 and was appointed Global & VIP Manager in 2013. He also became Branch Manager for the Salvador office, position which he occupied until 2012.
Celso’s career began in 1993 where he became a Boarding Clerk at Operations Department for Intersea Shipping Agency. Two years later, in 1995, he joined Saam Company also as a Boarding Clerk for Import Documentation Department, where he stayed for three years until he came to MSC.
Graduated in Business Administration, Celso played a crucial part on the opening of MSC Salvador Branch Office.
He is currently in control of the Global and VIP accounts and provides support to MSC Geneva and other offices.
Cristiano first joined MSC in 2003 as a Sales Coordinator, but his first contact within the logistics/maritime department happened in 1997 at Crowley Maritime Agency where he worked as a trainee.
He provided support to the field team and worked on prospecting and canvassing cargoes in the entire state of Sao Paulo.
He graduated in International Business in 1997.
Nowadays Cristiano is managing the pricing and the liner teams to control vessel allocation, contracts, export performance and agreements follow up. His market vision is always providing and generating new opportunities to MSC customers, promoting and seeking a better service portfolio.
Demian first joined the company in 2002 as a Sales Executive. A year later he became Pricing Americas Coordinator, and in 2006 he turned Liner Manager of Americas. In 2011 he was named Global & VIP Accounts manager, but after one year he became Sales Manager, position he held for 3 years. Finally, in 2015 he took the role of Americas Trade Manager.
His first experience within the maritime/logistics industry was at Seaways Maritime Agency, where he handled booking and generated reports to depots for container release, allocation control with carrier, and customer relationship.
Demian graduated on Business Administration on International Trade.
He's currently responsible for the export performance to Americas, monitoring market and competition, working close with Headquarter, Pricing & Sales teams to define policies and strategies, and supporting Line & Capacity division to maximize vessel performance.
Diógenes first joined the company in 2006 as a Sales Coordinator in Sao Paulo. He was then promoted to Manager and in 2011 he was both Sales and Customer Service Manager. And since 2013 he has been Customer Service Manager Brazil.
His first contact within the logistics/maritime industry happened in 1977 in Frigorifico Bordon (now JBS) where we worked as a Logistics Analyst. He has also worked on Sadia and Maersk.
He graduated on Business Administration.
His current responsibilities within MSC are first and foremost managing the customer service team, which contains a great group of professionals in charge of bookings, cargo deadlines, quoting and everything related to cargo shipment. He is also a knowledge transmitter, maintaining the quality wheel spinning.
Douglas joined MSC in 2009 as branch manager in Rio de Janeiro. A year later he assumed his current cargo in Sao Paulo.
Before MSC he worked at Companhia Libra de Navegação/CSAV Group. But his first contact within the maritime/logistics industry was in 1987 at Lachmann Group working as an operation assistant at West Africa Trade.
He is graduated at Trade International Commerce, and has an MBA on Business Administration in Managing Strategy.
Currently, his responsibilities towards MSC are leading pricing staff and managing strategy with our Headquarters and Sales Team. He also provides indirect support to the line division whenever required due to past experience as Trade Manager.
Elber's first contact with shipping was in 1993 at Montemar Agency as water clerk. He also worked on Fertimport, Zim do Brasil and Proinde (local P&I representative).
He joined MSC in 1997, as an Operation Assistant. Only a year later he became a planner.
In 2000 he took over management at Claims & UAC department. The next year he assumed Operations management. Two years later he became a Commercial Manager for Reefer Cargo.
In 2006 Elber was appointed Commercial Director and in 2008 became Managing Director of the company in Brazil.
Elber is a bachelor in Business Administration, post-grad in Ports and Logistics, and has an MBA on Business Administration and Management. He also attended an APEC Seminary in Antwerp in 2003.
His current responsibilities include an accurate vision of the whole company in Brazil and the report of over a thousand employees.
Elmer joined the company in 2010 as Senior Project Manager focusing attention on investments and improving dynamics inside the logistics departments, assuring that maximum quality was achieved.
His whole career was established on Maritime Shipping and since 1988 he has covered from operational processes to managing strategic models. He was fundamental on the launch of new projects, which solidified into strong brands in the market.
Elmer is graduated on Biologic Science and has a MBA on Ports and Logistics.
Currently, some of his main responsibilities towards MSC are arranging new solutions for customers and partners, promoting excellence and quality on all intersections within the logistics flow.
Erika Jamas first joined MSC in 2008 as Pricing Coordinator for Relay & Far East Trade. Her first contact within logistics and maritime business happened in 1999 at CSAV - where she worked as Commercial Assistant for the American Trade. Erika has a specialized background within Pricing and Capacity areas, consolidated during her journey at the Shipping Industry.
Currently, Erika is managing Reefer department providing total support in the operation. Her responsibilities cover from development of new commercial opportunities in the main reefer market around the globe, reducing costs and ensuring on total plugs utilization in our vessels.
Erika graduated on Business Administration focused on Foreign Trade.
Erika Rodrigues first started working at MSC in 2000 at the Administrative Department, which was her first contact with the Logistics and Maritime industries. Two years later she was transferred to Customer Service Department, handling several commodities. In 2005 she moved to Liner Europe Department, where she stayed 5 years until she became Liner Coordinator. After that she was appointed as Manager for EQC department, being responsible for controlling empty repositioning of containers all over the Brazilian coast.
Two years later she was back at the Commercial team at the Coffee Department and in December of 2015, she started a new department specialized on commodities being responsible, along with her team for all export volume of coffee, sugar, soya, cotton and corn from Brazil to all over the world.
Erika has a Major on Business Administration.
Ettore joined the company in 2013 in charge for managing all commercial actions in the Intermodal area.
His first contact within the maritime/logistics industry was in 1996 at Panalpina as a Commercial Analyst working in the air/maritime segment.
Through the years, Ettore has worked in great companies in the logistics department, which brought him versatility and knowledge managing commercial teams, focusing always on customer’s needs.
Ettore graduated in Administration in Foreign Business.
He is currently responsible for all Intermodal commercial planning in Brazil working side by side with MSC maritime portfolio.
Guilherme has been working for MSC for 10 years. He first joined the company in 2004 as a Financial Analyst in the Freight Control Department, which was his first contact with the logistics and maritime industries. Later he moved to the Pricing Department, Liner Department and in 2012 he became Pricing Deputy Manager.
He holds a Bachelor in Business Administration and has a MBA in International Business. He also spent a year in Australia.
His main current responsibilities consist of defining a pricing strategy for the commercial team, formulating local pricing rules, implications and requirements to support the delivery of the strategy. He also played an important role in the development of the Far East trade, justified by MSC’s new service – Ipanema – which was launched to the market and helped positioning MSC as one of the most important carriers on the Far East trade.
Jerry first started his role at MSC in 2001 as an Office Boy. A year later he became an Analyst for Import Documentation Department. In 2008 he was promoted Coordinator of the department and three years later took over as Deputy Manager. Since 2013 he has been Deputy Manager, and on June 2016 he became the Import Trade Manager.
His first role within the logistics/maritime industry was as a trainee at Deicmar, working on controlling cargo status. He is graduated on Business Administration.
Jerry’s main responsibilities are following-up competitors, analysing overall market situation and economics aspects to identify growth and performance improvement opportunities and assisting Geneva’s Trade Managers and counterparts at origin.
João started his professional career in 2007 working at MSC as a Documentation Analyst. A year later he changed to MEDLOG as a Sales Intermodal Analyst.
In 2009 he became a Liner Europe, position which provided him extensive knowhow and knowledge on vessel’s capacity, planning and all matters related to shipping. Three years later, in 2012, he assumed coordination at Reefer Pricing & Capacity where he was responsible for controlling reefer vessel’s capacity, focused on minimizing costs and therefore generating minimum commercial impact.
In 2013 he was named Deputy Manager for Import Trade Department, focused on the European trade. Finally, in 2016 he was named Capacity & VSA (Vessel Share Agreement) Manager.
He is currently responsible for capacity and vessel allocation control of all services running in the Brazilian coast, besides the management of vessel share & slot agreements with competitors. His knowledge, acquired across departaments where he worked, helps finding solutions to optimize vessel capacity, trying to meet customers demand at most.
He’s graduated on Business Logistics Management and is hols a MBA in Financials.
João Turano started his career at MSC in 2008 in a trainee program, which contributed for the development of his skills at the Sales department. Two years later he became Sales Coordinator, handling several accounts at the Commercial area. Soon after he was responsible for the Global and VIP accounts.
In 2015, 7 years after first joining MSC he was named Sales Deputy Manager, being in charge for all Sao Paulo accounts.
João Turano has a major in Business Administration focused on Foreign Trade and has an MBA on Marketing. He has lived abroad in Australia, Costa Rica and Peru.
Born and raised in Lyon- France, living in Brazil for 16 years, Laurent joined the company in 1999 as a Sales Coordinator. A year later he was nominated Branch Manager of MSC Rio de Janeiro Office, position he handled for two years before being appointed as USA Trade Manager.
He was appointed Commercial Director in 2007.
His career within Logistics and Maritime Industry first started in France after his graduation and military service, at Rhône-Merieux Pharma where he worked on the Export Department to West Africa followed by South America.
Graduated in Economy & International Trade in Lyon, Laurent currently manages the sales structure and performance for Import and Export lanes plus Medlog. He is currently responsible for developing new business in all areas and commodities, from auto parts to agro business and current customer’s follow-up. He is assisted by 13 commercial agencies in Brazil.
Luiz joined MSC in 2007, working as an Operations Analyst. One year later he joined the liner department, and after two years working as a capacity coordinator, he started his activities at pricing desk. Since 2015 he is the Pricing Manager for Europe & Relay Traffic.
His first contact with the maritime/logistics industry was in 2005, working as an Office-Boy at Grieg S.A, a maritime agency.
Luiz graduated on Business Administration and post graduated in International Business.
He’s currently responsible for the product management on Europe & Relay traffic, aiming to improve MSC’s share and operational profit in these trades. He supports the commercial team on negotiations, developing new business and maintaining current ones, as well as analyzing market to improve service quality and performance.
Maíra Alves first contact in the Shipping industry was at 2001 on quality control for soy and sugar cargo shipments. Her career at MSC first began in 2008, when she started working as an Import Analyst on Far East Trade. In July of 2010 she was promoted Coordinator, however, at another trade: Relay, MED and Turkey.
In April of 2012 she took over Coordination again on Far East Trade and three years later, in August of 2015, she was promoted Deputy Manager for the same trade. She is responsible to follow up the competition, analyze all market conditions and work together with Headquarter and foreign agents to improve MSC’s position in this trade.
Maíra is graduated on International Relations.
He first started working at MSC in 2011 already as a Financial Manager. Born in Santos, Pedro has also worked in San Jose (Costa Rica) and Rio de Janeiro.
His first contact within the maritime/logistics industry happened in 1984, working at the logistics department for Dickinson Shipping Agency, where he was responsible for containers stock control, manifest check and demurrage billing. Five years later, in 1989 he became a Controlling Analyst at Fertimport/Bunge. In 2008 he became General Manager for the CSAV Agency in Costa Rica.
Pedro is a graduated Accountant and post graduated in Controlling and Audit, and also has a specialization in Marketing and Sales.
His current responsibilities within MSC are being in charge of Receivable Accounts, liaising with the commercial team and keeping contact with customers and lawyers in order to receive pending amounts in administrative and juridical collection without jeopardizing the commercial relationship. He is also responsible for Cost Control Department, providing support to the team and help seeking solutions to optimize time in submitting the final D/A to the Board of Directors.
He first joined the company in 2008 as a Finance Coordinator and two years later assumed department management. Before MSC, he worked on Hapag-Lloyd as Payable Accounts Supervisor. But his first contact within the Logistics and Maritime Industry was at Hanjin Shipping do Brasil Ltda where he worked as both Operation and Finance Assistant.
Rafael graduated in Business Administration for International Relationship and Foreign Business and has an MBA in International Business and Entrepreneurship.
He is currently responsible for internal audit for MSC Group in Brazil.
Ricardo joined MSC in June 2008 as a Sales Coordinator for the São Paulo city area. Few months later he switched area and started to attend the country side customers, a role he played for 4 years, developing new clients and several intermodal/logistics business.
From 2013 to the 1st half of 2016 he worked at Global Accounts department, where he delivered great results on both export, import and intermodal business. Ricardo is now the Import Deputy Manager, in charge of the Americas trade. He is responsible to follow up the competition, analyze all market conditions and identify opportunities to improve MSC’s position in this trade.
Ricardo holds a Bachelor in Business Administration, and has lived abroad for 3 years in San Diego, California.
Rodrigo started working for MSC in January 2016 as Finance Director. He holds a bachelor in Production Engineering and has a MBA in Finance and Risk Management. He built his professional career on the financial segment throughout several areas up until achieving executive management of major companies.
His first contact with the logistics industry was in 2010, when he joined the Transport business unit of Odebrecht, one of the largest construction and infrastructure companies in Brazil. Before joining MSC he also worked as CFO at Embraport, a container terminal in Santos.
In MSC he is in charge of several areas such as finance, accounting, administrative and human resources department.
Thiago joined MSC in 2002 as a Clerk Board in the Operations Department.
He then worked as an ECSA Planning Assistant before moving to a Marketing Analyst position in 2004. Between 2006 and 2014, he held various positions in Marketing, Global & VIP Accounts, Customer Service and Human Resources. In 2014, he was appointed Marketing Manager for Latin America.
Before joining MSC, Thiago spent two years in the United States and got his first experience of the logistics and shipping industries. He first joined Fertimport/Bunge as a trainee in the Operations department. Then, he worked at UPS – Air Shipments (New Jersey) in the Customer Service department.
Thiago holds a Bachelor in Business Administration and Marketing and a MBA in Branding.
His current responsibilities consist of providing support and guidance to all MSC Latin America agencies in order to apply the global marketing strategy.
Ully first joined MSC in 2004 as an export customer service for the Relay Traffic. Two years later he became a sales coordinator, first focused on import business, and later in charge of both export and import sales.
Graduated in International Business Administration and also holding a MBA in International Trade/Negotiation, Ully played an important part to develop the NVOCC Accounts Department, area he managed from 2014 to the first half 2016, handling the main NVOCC and Freight Forwarders in the Brazilian market.
Ully is now the Import Deputy Manager for the Far East traffic. He is responsible for monitoring market and competitors, developing new business and handling the current ones in order to improve MSC’s position in this trade.
Vanderlei started working on MSC in 1997 as a Documentation Analyst. Four years later he became Manager of the department. Then, in 2012 and 2013 he assumed management of all Agencies and also of BPM (Business Process Management) department.
Before joining MSC he worked at SAAM (Carriers, P & O Nedlloyd + CSAV) for three years and prior that at Cargonave Agency as a Board Clerk.
Vanderlei’s first role and company within the logistics/maritime industry was at agency L. Figueiredo S.A where he worked as a Board Clerk and also handled Import and Export Documentation.
He is a bachelor in Management and International Trade Logistics and his current responsibilities within MSC is providing support and guidance to the leadership team regarding strategic management and also coordinating employee evaluation process with the management of local Board of Directors to maintain MSC’s global growth path and KPI’s.
Also, Vanderlei is the representative director of Sindamar – Association of Maritime Agencies, member of ACS – Commercial Association of Santos (on navigation sectorial chamber), and part of the documentation board of CNNT – Ship-owners Association.
