Captain Gianluigi Aponte is the Founder and Group Executive Chairman of MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A.
Born in Sorrento, Italy, Mr Aponte started his career as a captain operating passenger ferries in the Mediterranean for his family’s business after graduating from the Italian Maritime Academy.
In 1970, following a break from the world of maritime transport to work as a banker for a number of years, Mr Aponte returned to the industry to start his own business, MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company. Starting out with a single general cargo vessel, the MSC Patricia, Mr Aponte has developed and led the company with true entrepreneurial spirit for over four decades. In the early days of MSC, Mr Aponte used the expression ‘where the customer goes, MSC goes’. This vision brought exponential growth in terms of both volume and fleet capacity which now serve customers all over the world. Over the past 45 years, Mr Aponte has led MSC from a one vessel operation to become the second-largest container shipping line in the world.
MSC has been built around its core family values of caring for people. Although the company has grown rapidly over the past forty years, Mr Aponte still remains focussed on cultivating our own special ingredient which is MSC’s family spirit.
As winner of many industry awards for his contribution to the maritime industry, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the UK trade publication Containerisation International, Captain Aponte is an esteemed industry leader known for his dynamic approach and wealth of knowledge and experience in container shipping. It is not just the maritime industry that acknowledges Mr Aponte’s achievements. In 2009, at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, he was one of the top leading Neapolitan businessmen to receive the "Neapolitan Excellence in the World" award from Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. In 2013, Mr Aponte was awarded the “Ordine Al Merito del Lavoro” (Order of Merit for Labour) by Italian President Giorgio Napolitano. Mr Aponte’s reputation as a successful businessman and industry contributor also earned him the prestigious “Legion d’Honneur” (Legion of Honour) accolade in March 2010 and a significant vote of confidence from French President Nicolas Sarkozy for the part he played in creating 6,000 jobs at the STX France shipyard at St Nazaire, France by placing a new vessel order.
Diego Aponte is President and CEO of MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A.
Son to Gianluigi Aponte and his wife Rafaela, Diego was raised sharing his family’s passion for the sea. After school Diego took his first steps towards his ultimate career by furthering his education in London, becoming a post graduate of Maritime Studies with a particular focus on shipping.
In 1997 Diego joined MSC, training on-board vessels as a junior engineer to gain first-hand technical experience. To increase his breadth of maritime knowledge Diego also worked in MSC Ship Management in Sorrento, gaining valuable experience of MSC’s operations.
Upon joining MSC Headquarters in Geneva, Diego worked in all departments including Latin American and USA trades, immersing himself in the day-to-day challenges and successes of the business.
In the late nineties, Diego identified an opportunity for MSC to invest in a terminal infrastructure which he believed would help to facilitate the long-term growth of the container industry. In 2000, Diego created Terminal Investment Limited S.A. (TIL), which, under his careful management and direction has become one of the largest terminal operators in the world. Today, Diego is the Chairman of TIL.
From 2006 Diego worked closely with his father as Vice President of the business, before being announced in 2014 as President and CEO of MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A.
Ariel joined MSC Argentina at the beginning of year 2000 in the Finance Department. He studied at J.F.K. University earning a degree in 2007 as an Accountant. Three years later, he obtained a Degree in Business Administration.
He took part in the Collection, Treasury and Accounting departments. He was in charge of Accounting from 2008 to 2014. His main tasks were internal audits, taxes and control.
In the year 2015 Ariel was promoted to Financial Manager, taking on new challenges, adapting the department, achieving efficiency in all departments while fulfilling internal and external requirements.
Claus joined MSC in August 2014 and after an exciting period heading up a young team in MSC Paraguay he was appointed as the Managing Director of MSC Argentina in July 2015.
Claus has worked in shipping since 1989, based in a number of locations around the world, including Denmark, Senegal, Mali, Indonesia, Australia, Italy, South Africa and Germany before joining MSC in South America.
His functional experience includes Logistics, Terminal/Inland Services, Liner/Trade, Commercials, Operations and General Management.
When not engaged in shipping, Claus enjoys spending time with his wife Harriet and son Luca!
Javier Luser joined MSC's Operations Department in September of 2000.
In 2008, he was promoted to Manager. He undertook more responsibilities and was tasked to assist MSC Geneva with contract negotiation for Terminals and other issues.
In addition, he supported MSC Geneva´s Liners with the berth windows in the ports of our country.
He also assists Sorrento with all MSC's Cruises matters.
Javier Luser as Operations' Manager, is in charge of all vessel operations & boarding agents, transshipments, customs matters, dangerous cargoes, CINS and sustainability.
Jimena studied International Trade at the UADE University in Argentina.
Her first experience with the maritime/logistic industry was at Direct Container Line, working at the Commercial Department in the customer service sector, where she handled the bookings with the carriers, generated marketing reports and made close follow-up to the customers.
Jimena first joined MSC in 1997 at the Customer Service Department for Import and Export.
In 2000 she was promoted as Usa Line Manager and in 2006 she became Trade Manager.
Her main responsibilities are defining a pricing strategy for the commercial team, formulating local pricing rules, implications and requirements to support the delivery of this strategy, aligning, defining targets and managing the liner team.
Jorge Gabutti has been working for MSC Argentina for more than 14 years. He studied at the University of Buenos Aires and obtained a degree as an accountant in 1996. Thenceforth, he was part of Ernst & Young, one of the largest auditing companies in the world.
In 2001, he joined MSC as an accountant into the Financial Department, being taxes, accounting and payroll his main responsabilities.
He took a master's degree in Human Resources at the Pontifical Catholic University Argentina in 2007. During the same year, the HR Department was created and he was promoted to HR Manager.
Nowadays he leads the HR Team and their main current responsabilities are recruitment, training, benefits, payroll and Internal communication.
Juan Cardena has a degree on Computer Engineering Technology and when he joined MSC in 2007, was primarily tasked with system analysis and development on the IT department.
During his first years in the company, he developed new IT tools aiming to optimize resources by means of automatization and the use of a service oriented architecture.
In 2010 he was promoted to Development Manager and ,along with his team, he improved the integration with suppliers and the communication with clients through the development of the local website platform.
Nowadays, he continues his work, looking for new technologies and developing tools to provide the best possible experience when doing business with MSC.
Leandro was very young when he joined MSC in January 1998.
He has been part of MSC since its beginnings in Argentina, performing different tasks in different areas such as Finance, Documentation and Intermodal.
In 2002 he was promoted to Intermodal Manager after a short time in Medlog Antwerp and Geneva as a trainee.
In 2007 he created the Container Control Department.
Today, Leandro is the Logistics Manager of MSC Argentina and General Manager of Medlog Argentina.
Maria holds degrees in Law from UADE, Philosophy from USAL and a Diploma in High Studies in French Civilization awarded by the Alliance Française.
She taught Philosophy at USAL and she acquired extensive knowledge in marine insurance while working in a loss adjusting company. Soon after, she began working in an International freight forwarder where she developed extensive experience about refrigerated cargo before joining MSC at the end of 2006.
She developed the Legal and Claims Department, area she still manages, during her first year in the company.
Nowadays, she continues heading the Legal and Claims Department, undertaking all the professional challenges that this area of the business involves.
Martín studied at the University of Buenos Aires and obtained a degree as an Accountant in 1996. Two years later, he completed an MBA in the same University. He was in charge of the audit division in an important consultant firm.
He joined MSC in August 1997 as an accountant, at beginning of MSC’s operations in Buenos Aires. He is one of the most long-standing employees in the agency .
Three years later, he was promoted Financial Manager at the young age of 28. He has been in charge of collections, cost control, treasury dept, taxes, accounting since March 2000. He was also involved in several implementations as accounting system, reporting, etc.
In 2014, he was promoted to Deputy Managing Director of MSC Argentina, another important stage inside the organization.
Nowadays he is working hard on cash efficiency to avoid any losses due to permanent changes and new rules in global commerce.
Pablo has a degree in International Trade. He worked for Customs Brokers, Freight Forwarders and a Shipping Agency before joining MSC in 1997, when the company opened its doors in the country.
He started as the first Documentation Assistant. Later on he was promoted to Manager. Since then, he has been in charge of the department with the highest employee turnover of the company, selecting and training new employees. His department is the main source of skilled employees for other areas of the company.
Pablo is responsible for the documentation issued and manifested in Argentina.
Before starting his career in MSC Argentina in 1998, Pablo Warnes worked as a developer in the Editorial business for 7 years.
He studied at the University of Belgrano, where he obtained his degree in Systems Engineering.
His first challenge in the company was the implementation of the first new system that MSC had defined as standard for the world. Argentina was the first country that started its implementation.
Nowadays he is in charge the maintenance of the IT infrastructure, working hard to improve the functionality of the servers, desktops, communication (both voice and data), providing a secure and reliable environment for all the MSC Staff from both offices, Buenos Aires and Rosario.
Graduated in Business Administration, Romina joined MSC Argentina at the begining of 2000, with an audit background in the Finance Dept.
The following year she launched the Marketing Department, implementing reporting and statistics analysis, moving closer to the commercial aspects of the business. Later she was promoted to Line Manager and then to Trade Manager, her current position.
Her responsibilities include: managing the liner team, achieving an annual budget while positioning MSC as a market leader, and also guiding the sales team, identifying market opportunities and providing the tools to enhance customers loyalty through improved service and information quality.
Sergio has been working for MSC for 17 years. He first joined MSC Argentina in 1998 at the Import Documentation Department, but his first contact with the logistics and maritime sector was at Niver Lines, where he worked at the Documentation & Customs department.
He became Import Manager in 2004 after becoming sales executive.
Nowadays he is focused on defining commercial strategies for the commercial import team, developing new import businesses and following customer´s main needs.
