On the day following Republic Day, which marked the 100th anniversary of the Turkish Republic, MSC named one of the world's largest and most fuel-efficient container ships by design, the MSC TÜRKİYE, part of the Celestino Maresca class of vessels. This momentous ceremony was celebrated with a grand event on October 30th, attended by various dignitaries.
Moments of MSC TÜRKİYE
On Monday, October 30th, MSC TÜRKİYE had its maiden call ceremony at Asyaport, Türkiye's largest transit container port. This spectacular celebration took place in Tekirdağ, where Asyaport is located. The ceremony was attended by over 700 guests, including high-ranking government officials, customers, and members of the press. Following a captivating video presentation showcasing the grandeur of the MSC TÜRKİYE, high-ranking government officials delivered the opening speeches. The Speaker of the Parliament from 2019 to 2023 presented a plaque to MSC Group President Mr. Diego Aponte and MSC Group Senior Vice President Mrs. Ela Soyuer-Aponte, who proposed the name in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Turkish Republic, in recognition of their investments and as a gesture of gratitude. Furthermore, the Deputy Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure presented a plaque to the ship's captain. After the plaque exchange, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to celebrate MSC Türkiye's contribution to Türkiye and global trade followed by the flag ceremony from MSC TÜRKİYE.
One Step Closer to Net Zero
MSC places a strong emphasis on energy efficiency and eco-friendly technology in its new generation of vessels. The MSC TÜRKİYE stands out with her lowest carbon footprint per container carried and significant reduction in terms of CO2 emissions per transport work. MSC Group President Diego Aponte highlighted this in his speech by stating, "MSC TÜRKİYE, the largest and most efficient and eco-friendly ships ever built, will enable us to bring the world to the doors of our customers on the most fuel-efficient network."
Introducing the MSC TÜRKİYE
Following the naming ceremony, guided tours of the ship and tugboat tours were organized to allow everyone to experience the scale of the MSC TÜRKİYE. Commenting on what the vessel symbolizes in terms of commitment to Türkiye, MSC Türkiye CEO Hasan Piroğlu said: "With our investments in sea, land, rail, storage, and port facilities for the Turkish Republic, we, as the MSC Türkiye family, have accomplished numerous 'firsts' in the 28 years of our journey. Today, we bear witness to yet another milestone. We wish MSC TÜRKİYE, the world's largest container ship, fair winds and following seas, and we continue to serve and grow, contributing to a brighter future."
