MSC and MEDLOG Assist Operation Smile’s Shipment of Medical Equipment to Madagascar
05/03/2022
We’re happy to highlight the recent work of MSC and MEDLOG Madagascar to support Operation Smile with their recent shipment of medical equipment to the island.
Over the years, MSC has worked closely with a number of charities to accomplish what we see as positive changes in the countries where we operate. Recently, we are proud to support Operation Smile in Madagascar.
Since 1982, Operation Smile has provided free surgical procedures for children and young adults born with cleft lip, cleft palate, and other facial deformities. They are one of the world’s largest volunteer-based nonprofits. Their first surgical operation in Madagascar was done in 2007, and they have been active on the island nation ever since.
Earlier this year, we moved a container of much-needed medical material from Grangemouth in the United Kingdom to Tamatave Port in Madagascar. The container was then transported inland by MEDLOG, to Joseph Ravoahangy Andrianavalona hospital in Antananarivo.
When asked about why MSC provided this kind of support to Operation Smile, Thierry Jeandet, Managing Director of MSC Madagascar, said “Operation Smile not only gives children a beautiful smile but opens wide the doors of social integration, giving them a chance to have access not only to education and a professional future, but also a blooming family life. This corresponds perfectly to one of our values of equal opportunity for all.”
The medical material brought by MSC and MEDLOG consists of complete kits to equip operating theatres as well as equipment for the pediatric rooms of the hospital to be able to accommodate young patients receiving treatment as well as any accompanying adults that may be with them.
MSC UK and MSC Madagascar collaborated to provide logistical, storage, and overland transport support to Operation Smile to ensure the cargo reached its final destination.
