MSC was honored to receive with the North Star Environmental Stewardship Award, presented annually by the Northwest Seaport Alliance (NSA), a collaborative partnership between the ports of Seattle and Tacoma who manage the marine cargo operations in Puget Sound gateway. This prestigious award recognizes companies that contribute meaningfully to the health of the natural environment in the region.
“This award is a tremendous honor and underscores our unwavering commitment to conservation efforts in Washington and elsewhere around the world,” said Matthew Harris, Port Operations Manager, who proudly accepted the award on behalf of MSC at the NSA Annual Customer Reception. “As responsible ocean stewards, MSC continuously looks to make a meaningful impact on our collective environment.”
MSC was nominated by Quiet Sound, an initiative led by a coalition of Washington state-based organizations to create a thriving Blue Economy. The programs mission is to mitigate the noise impact of large commercial ships on Southern Resident killer whales, for whom Puget Sound serves as critical habitat.
Our voluntary participation in their vessel slowdown initiative played a key role in earning this North Star Award. Vessel slowdowns reduce underwater noise pollution by as much as 12-50%, helping the South Resident killer whales communicate and hunt more effectively with their pods.
By actively engaging in initiatives like Quiet Sound, we continue to take meaningful steps toward protecting our oceans and the communities that depend on them. A heartfelt thank you to all those involved and continuously supporting our whale conservation efforts.
