This year MSC will celebrate its 40th Anniversary in Spain. This history began on 2 May 1982 when the first offices were opened in Valencia and Barcelona, and today MSC Spain has over 600 staff dedicated to servicing the needs of its customers in the country.

To mark this historic moment, MSC Spain will host a series of events for people who have worked with the company over the years and who have contributed to its success and growth, including those in the local community. This will include a public firework display, that will be launched at the Port of Valencia at midnight on Friday 6th May.

Find out more about MSC Spain’s History

MSC began operating in Spain in the late 1970s and opened its first two offices, one in Valencia and another one in Barcelona, in 1982. As of Q1 2022, the company now operates 14 offices in the country: Valencia, Algeciras, Alicante, Barcelona, Bilbao, Cadiz, Gijon, Las Palmas, Madrid, Malaga, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Sevilla, Vigo and Zaragoza. MSC also has a Shipping Instruction processing centre in Valencia which handles local clients’ Bill of Lading production.

As part of its ongoing commitment to the region, MSC Group has also invested in a dedicated terminal in Valencia, a key hub for MSC's Mediterranean trade and the main port for Spain. With direct services to and from all continents, Valencia is strategically located in the middle of Spain’s coastline and is well-connected to the economic areas of Madrid, Eastern Andalucia, and key regions in the Mediterranean corridor, such as Castellon, Valencia and Alicante.

The port is one of the busiest in Spain and has a strong international logistics network including good road and rail connections. Additionally, MSC has port terminal investments in Bilbao in the north of Spain and Las Palmas in the Canary Islands, one of the company’s main hubs in the Atlantic.

Ignacio Ballester, Deputy Country Manager - MSC Spain, says: ‘This anniversary is another opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to the Spanish market, which continues to be very important to MSC. We will continue to work closely with our clients to address the current challenges in the industry and to, humbly, further our growth in the country.’

Connecting Spain to the world

MSC maintains its firm commitment to enabling trade to and from the region, keeping a close eye on the market and adjusting its service network, including launching new services and adjusting rotations to cater to new growth opportunities. Most recently, a direct connection was established to Philadelphia via MSC’s INDUS 2 Service, providing new opportunities for the region’s fruit trade to the USA.

MSC has been offering door-to-door services in Spain since 2001 and today provides a full range of logistics and supply chain services for customers through its logistics arm, MEDLOG, including rail and inland transportation, liquid cargo solutions - including flexibags and container lining, warehousing, and reefer services among others.

Besides shipping services, MSC is continuously investing in the development of digital tools and technologies to provide easy-to-use, flexible and reliable online solutions to enhance the customer experience. MSC Spain is pleased to promote an ever-increasing range of digital tools for its customers.

This includes MSC’s electronic Bill of Lading (eBL), which enables all parties involved in a cargo shipment booking to issue, transfer, endorse and manage the bill of lading document electronically through an independent blockchain platform, without any disruption to business operations. In addition, MSC is constantly developing its global eBusiness platform to make the cargo booking process ever more efficient and offer our customers a seamless online experience.

Proud of the company's track record in Spain, Francisco Lorente, Managing Director - MSC Spain, acknowledges: "Looking back on 40 years, I can do nothing but express my sincere thanks to our customers and business partners for their support throughout this time, and of course also to our staff, who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to do the best job possible".
