MSC Sailing Team Ready for The Barcolana, The Largest Regatta in The World

07/10/2019

After a great performance in the Turkcell Platinum Bosphorus Cup, MSC’s competitive sailing team is excited to be taking part for the second time in the Barcolana, the largest regatta in the world.

For this race, MSC will compete with its own boat, MSC Team Psaros33. The Barcolana crew includes five MSC employees: Joel Kunzi, Massimiliano Venezian, Sebastian Wittgenstein, Simone Arienti, as well as members outside of the company: Nicolas Groux, skipper, Jean and Mikis Psarofaghis, owners of Psarofaghis Shipyard, respectively pit and trimmer mate.

Held in Trieste, Italy on 13 October, the Barcolana has been running since 1969.  It is the largest sailing race in the World. Last year, for the 50 anniversary, more than 2600 boats lined up at the start line. The regatta is open to all sailors, from World-class helmsmen to amateur racers and cruisers. The Barcolana is more than a race, it is an event characterised by over a week of celebrations both on land and at sea, transforming every year Trieste into the European capital of sailing.

The MSC sailing team started as an internal initiative but the commitment of our sailors was so impressive that it was decided the team should start participating in international regattas.

MSC’s participation to the Barcolana is no coincidence. It underlines the importance of the Adriatic port in our container shipping network and highlights the friendship between our company and the city of Trieste. Hence MSC as well as taking part in the Trieste Gulf challenge is also sponsoring the Barcolana 51 itself. Our stand is located in the Sponsor Area at booth number 75-76 where, in partnership with Marevivo – the Italian marine conservation association founded in 1985 – it will promote biodiversity and sustainable development values and the enhancement of marine protected areas, as well as the fight against pollution and illegal fishing, while encouraging environmental education.

One of the greenest sports around

MSC is built on maritime heritage, with a genuine passion for the sea and a strong commitment to our employees and communities. This makes sailing a natural fit for our business and corporate values, as a family company that cares for the environment and our people.

Sailing is one of the greenest sports in the world and by nature promotes the preservation of marine environment – and we need clean seas to properly perform in both competitions and in business.
