Last month, we challenged our employees to put on their walking boots for a sponsored walk covering 574 miles – the equivalent distance between our UK HQ in Ipswich and our global HQ in Geneva! – in 31 days. They certainly stepped up to the challenge, raising over £1250 for our Charity of the Year.
Fundraising and charity events have long played a significant role at MSC, something that is deep-rooted in our family culture and, despite COVID-19’s best efforts, is still at the forefront of our minds.
Each year our staff are able to nominate and vote to determine which charity we will select as our Charity of the Year – cue the ridiculous fancy dress outfits, the laughs and a delicious cake or two freshly baked the night before work.
This year we are proud to be supporting the amazing work of Colchester & Ipswich Hospital Charity's Baby Bereavement Group. Local to MSC UK’s Ipswich headquarters, this vital organisation is made up of a voluntary team of midwives and maternity care assistants working to improve the way bereaved parents are cared for.
Though some of our traditional fundraising routes haven’t been possible due to ongoing restrictions, our team have found ways to continue to come together to raise money for our Charity of the Year even when we’re apart.
Last month, we put a remote working spin on the classic sponsored walk, setting MSC UK staff the challenge of walking 574 miles – the equivalent distance between our UK HQ in Ipswich and our global HQ in Geneva! – in 31 days.
Staff were encouraged to pull on their trainers and clock up some miles on foot (no bikes or cars allowed!), whether that be outside in the fresh air or just around the home/at the supermarket. This could be done either alone or as part of a small team, with mileage being recorded via a smartphone or a fitness watch and submitted weekly by email.
The total mileage recorded for the month of May was an impressive 1,891 miles. A brilliant effort from the MSC UK team and the equivalent of walking from Ipswich to Geneva (goal reached!) and back again, then back to Geneva! It is also the same as walking 37,820 laps of a football pitch!
The winning team, aptly named ‘Ships & Giggles’, clocked up an impressive 803 miles – a big well done to them and to everybody else that took part.
Through a mixture of sponsorship from fellow staff members, family, and friends, along with a nominal £1 entry fee per person, we’re pleased to share that our team raised a grand total of more than £1,250.
We would like to say a huge congratulations to everybody who took part and helped to raise money for a truly deserving cause. The support has been incredible, and we are so pleased with the result of this challenge.
