MSC Earns Blue Circle Award from the Port of Vancouver

16/06/2020

For the seventh consecutive year, MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company was recognised by Vancouver Fraser Port Authority for its voluntary efforts to conserve energy and reduce emissions under the Blue Circle Award.

The award acknowledges the highest level of fleet-wide participation in the port’s EcoAction Program, which recognizes fuel, technology and environmental management options for ship operators. It also serves as further validation of MSC’s commitment to reduce emissions and maximise our environmental performance.

Since 2007, the port authority’s programme has been encouraging efforts that go above and beyond regulatory requirements by offering financial incentives for vessels that have implemented emission reduction measures and other environmental practices. MSC has invested heavily in low-carbon technology and operational efficiency, in addition to retrofit programmes to improve performance across its fleet. For example, over 30% of MSC’s fleet is SPS-equipped (shore power supply) meaning the vessels can tap the local power grid, instead of relying on onboard generators. This way ships can reduce their emissions in port by around 80%.

MSC is committed to promoting a sustainable use of the sea and marine resources to minimize the environmental impact of business activities on land, oceans and populations. For more information, please visit our sustainability pages and download our latest Sustainability Report.
