In the UK, our history dates back over four decades, starting in 1977 as a five-man operation, under the name Medite in Ferensway, Hull. Today, MSC UK is celebrating our 40th year of trading as a leading UK shipping line, employing a team of over 600 local experts.
Roy Davies (our then Managing Director), Richard Hart and Mike Chambers launched Medite, primarily to operate as an agency to service MSC’s vessels sailing between the UK, East Africa and the Red Sea.
Developing a small team to manage our conventional cargo service to/from the UK, Medite was the beginning of our local heritage, with many people still referring to us by this name today.
In 1982, Medite moved South to make Southampton its primary UK port. By this time, a team of 20 people were in place and had begun its transition towards containerised cargo.
In 1984, we moved operations again, making Felixstowe our new home in a deliberate effort to be closer to the UK’s largest container port, prior to settling into our purpose-built offices in Ipswich, which remain our UK HQ today.
In the mid 1980’s, Medite began to utilise local rail networks and establish relationships with road logistics companies to efficiently move customers’ cargo inland. During this time we were working to establish dedicated haulage departments as we began to build the foundations of our multimodal business model.
Medite successfully developed into a modern liner agency, subsequently becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of MSC in 2004, and formally changed its name to Mediterranean Shipping Company (UK) Ltd.
Today, MSC has the widest UK port range of any carrier operating its own vessels, with nine local ports of call. Sitting alongside this is the ability to offer customers a nationwide network of dedicated road and rail services.
Operating from four regional offices in Ipswich, London, Liverpool and Glasgow, what makes MSC stand out in its industry is its team of over 600 people, committed to delivering customer excellence.
“Our people have very much been at the heart of our business since the 1970s and when you see the enthusiasm and energy with which our team throw themselves, not only into serving customers well but carrying out our various charitable efforts you know that they are enjoying the journey – as we celebrate our 40th year here in the UK that’s a really satisfying thought and one we are all proud to represent”. Dan Everitt, Managing Director MSC UK.
Now in its 40th year in the UK the business continues to embrace global investments in world-class infrastructure, ranging from the best connecting ports and terminals to intermodal services, and a state-of-the-art fleet of Oscar-class vessels to continue to deliver market-leading services across the UK.
