Captain Gianluigi Aponte is the Founder and Group Executive Chairman of MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A.
Born in Sorrento, Italy, Mr Aponte started his career as a captain operating passenger ferries in the Mediterranean for his family’s business after graduating from the Italian Maritime Academy.
In 1970, following a break from the world of maritime transport to work as a banker for a number of years, Mr Aponte returned to the industry to start his own business, MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company. Starting out with a single general cargo vessel, the MSC Patricia, Mr Aponte has developed and led the company with true entrepreneurial spirit for over four decades. In the early days of MSC, Mr Aponte used the expression ‘where the customer goes, MSC goes’. This vision brought exponential growth in terms of both volume and fleet capacity which now serve customers all over the world. Over the past 45 years, Mr Aponte has led MSC from a one vessel operation to become the second-largest container shipping line in the world.
MSC has been built around its core family values of caring for people. Although the company has grown rapidly over the past forty years, Mr Aponte still remains focussed on cultivating our own special ingredient which is MSC’s family spirit.
As winner of many industry awards for his contribution to the maritime industry, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the UK trade publication Containerisation International, Captain Aponte is an esteemed industry leader known for his dynamic approach and wealth of knowledge and experience in container shipping. It is not just the maritime industry that acknowledges Mr Aponte’s achievements. In 2009, at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, he was one of the top leading Neapolitan businessmen to receive the "Neapolitan Excellence in the World" award from Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. In 2013, Mr Aponte was awarded the “Ordine Al Merito del Lavoro” (Order of Merit for Labour) by Italian President Giorgio Napolitano. Mr Aponte’s reputation as a successful businessman and industry contributor also earned him the prestigious “Legion d’Honneur” (Legion of Honour) accolade in March 2010 and a significant vote of confidence from French President Nicolas Sarkozy for the part he played in creating 6,000 jobs at the STX France shipyard at St Nazaire, France by placing a new vessel order.
Diego Aponte is President and CEO of MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A.
Son to Gianluigi Aponte and his wife Rafaela, Diego was raised sharing his family’s passion for the sea. After school Diego took his first steps towards his ultimate career by furthering his education in London, becoming a post graduate of Maritime Studies with a particular focus on shipping.
In 1997 Diego joined MSC, training on-board vessels as a junior engineer to gain first-hand technical experience. To increase his breadth of maritime knowledge Diego also worked in MSC Ship Management in Sorrento, gaining valuable experience of MSC’s operations.
Upon joining MSC Headquarters in Geneva, Diego worked in all departments including Latin American and USA trades, immersing himself in the day-to-day challenges and successes of the business.
In the late nineties, Diego identified an opportunity for MSC to invest in a terminal infrastructure which he believed would help to facilitate the long-term growth of the container industry. In 2000, Diego created Terminal Investment Limited S.A. (TIL), which, under his careful management and direction has become one of the largest terminal operators in the world. Today, Diego is the Chairman of TIL.
From 2006 Diego worked closely with his father as Vice President of the business, before being announced in 2014 as President and CEO of MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A.
Aksu began his career in the shipping industry in 1996 when he joined MSC.
He was first working as Equipment Controller, but moved quickly to the Export Customer Service team.
In 2003, he was promoted to the position of Export Customer Service Manager which he still holds today, managing a team of professional and experienced customer service members at MSC Finland.
Kai started his shipping career in 1995 in P&O Containers where he had various finance and administration positions until the company was acquired by Maersk in 2005.
He then continued to work with Maersk holding similar positions until 2008 when he joined MSC Finland as Assistant Import Manager.
Today, Kai is Import Manager at MSC Finland with a team of professionals ready to serve all Finnish import clients with the style and heritage MSC is proud of.
In May 2010, Maria joined MSC Finland and took over the responsibility of Finance, Accounting and local Human Resources. She was also invited to become a member of MSC Finland Management Team.
Maria has gained a strong experience and background in Finance and Accounting in the shipping industry since 1997.
Before joining MSC Finland, she has worked for several years as Finance Manager and Finance Controller in the chemical tanker company Crystal Pool Ltd, which was part of the Italian Rimorchiatori Riuniti s.p.a. group and had offices in Helsinki, London and Moscow. She was also member of the Management Team at Crystal Pool Ltd.
Before that, she held various financial roles in the shipping company Hollming Ltd where her passion for shipping industry started.
She is a member of Wista - Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association.
Matti joined MSC in 2005 from P&O Nedlloyd, after an eventful career starting in 1987 as summer intern in Finnish Paper Shipping organization.
On completion of his studies in 1990 he joined agency for Sea-Land which later became Sea-Land’s own country organization in Finland.
In 1993, he joined P&O Containers agency and history repeated itself in 1996 when P&O Containers established its own branch in Finland. When P&O Containers and Nedlloyd merged in 1997, Matti continued with the Anglo Dutch company until 2005 when Maersk took it over.
Today he proudly leads one of the leading shipping companies in Finland and still enjoys the journey which started more than 25 years ago.
Petri started his shipping career in 1990 after retuning from United Nations Peacekeeping Mission back to Finland. His first position was in a company offering Trans Siberian rail service to and from the Far East.
In 1995, Petri joined MSC agency Shipco-Shipping being in charge of container control.
Today after 20 years service with MSC he is happy and privileged to have seen the growth of the company to what it is today.
The world has changed, situations change daily but his MSC mission is still going on.
As of September 2014, Sari Koivuneva took over the responsibility of Export Commercial Manager at MSC Finland.
Before this position she was working as Import Commercial Manager with overall responsibilities on all trades MSC offers into Finland for several years.
Sari joined MSC in 2006 from P&O Nedlloyd, soon after AP Moller’s acquisition and started her career at MSC as a Sales Manager. In 2007, she was invited to become a member of MSC Finland management team.
Sari has a strong experience and background in the shipping industry both on exports and imports as her career with P&O Containers followed by P&O Nedlloyd Ltd started already in 1995.
Terhi began her career in the shipping industry in 2002 with P&O Nedlloyd in export customer service.
She worked in both export and import customer service teams for three years while completing her studies at the University of Helsinki.
Terhi joined Maersk Finland after the AP Moller’s acquisition of P&O Containers in 2005 working in export documention.
In 2008, she joined MSC Finland and was quickly promoted to Export Documentation Manager followed by member of the Management team in 2014.
Today she is in charge of Export Reporting responsible for the export documentation and invoicing for MSC Finland.
Vincenzo was introduced to the shipping industry in 1996 when he joined Container Depot Ltd in Finland.
His career in MSC started in 2000 shortly after co-winning the IICL container inspector examinations
(The Institute of international container lessors) in 1999.
Today he is the manager of MSC Finland’s operations department in charge of daily operations for all MSC vessels calling Finnish ports.
