Our founder and Chairman Captain Aponte’s philosophy is to take care of his people. People are at the heart of the company and as a business we care not only for them but for their futures and their families.
Building better lives
Captain Aponte believes in young people and the potential they have, he sees very clearly that what they lack in experience can be made up in their eagerness to learn.
In Sorrento, Italy, we support the largest naval academy in the country, where MSC’s founder earned his captain's licence. In a special partnership, we regularly train the academy’s teachers so that they can ensure their students receive instruction on the latest technology. What’s more we also offer those students internships on-board our cargo and cruise ships.
At MSC both our cargo and cruise divisions strongly support CSR initiatives. In 2009, for example, MSC started a joint project with UNICEF called ‘Get On-board for Children’ as part of UNICEF’s worldwide programme ‘Education for All’.
We believe fervently that all children have a right to a decent life and that the first step on this road is education. That’s why we’re supporting UNICEF’s efforts to bring access to quality education in some of the most socially disadvantaged areas of Brazil. Our company and our customers are helping these children combat the effects of poverty and setting them on the path to better lives.
MSC also operates a very important apprenticeship programme, mainly in Santos, Brazil, that involves hiring and mentoring young people; after a three-year period of training these recruits can be hired as regular employees.
Challenging our people to improve
The key to our commitment to people is that we believe in their potential and we constantly challenge them to grow. We know just how fast the commercial world is moving and that these increasing demands are met most successfully by people eager to improve their skills. MSC is committed to supporting this improvement process.
In the USA, for example, we identified the need to put in place a system that would enable us to generate the leaders of tomorrow – so we built the “MSC University”. The university is a dedicated training and development facility designed to help our teams build their skill-sets, prepare them for greater responsibilities and boost their career trajectories.
By enabling people to work more effectively and developing real leadership mentalities, we help ensure they’re going to be successful in their lives whatever they do – both inside and outside of MSC. This success carries over to their families and brings a happier life altogether.
Supporting our local communities
The happiness carries over into our employees' own communities. Around the world MSC offices and agencies provide financial support and dedicate their time to improve other peoples' lives. From teaching sports to poor children in Brazil to supporting early childhood development programmes in South Africa, to funding air ambulances and cancer charities in the UK.
We’ve had amazing feedback on these social programmes / activities. In addition to delivering tangible help to important local causes, these initiatives bring a lot of energy that’s not linked to the work – it’s linked to something else: the joy of giving back.
At MSC we believe everyone deserves a chance to be the best that they can be and this principle lies at the heart of our approach to corporate social responsibility.
