Saturn 724 HG CCD detector

The new improved Saturn 724 HG is the latest CCD camera for small molecule crystallography from Rigaku. Incorporating the newest and most sophisticated Kodak® CCD chip, the Saturn 724 HG provides a new dimension in data quality, with high gain, a very fast readout speed, a large active area, high sensitivity and a broad dynamic range.

Perform rapid data collection

With the largest active area and fastest readout of any comparable small molecule CCD X-ray area detector, the Saturn 724 HG has been the perfect tool for fast data collection. Now, the Saturn 724 HG also boasts the highest sensitivity available among comparable detectors so there is no longer any reason to compromise. The 4-port readout, with a total digitization speed of 8 MHz, delivers maximum data in minimal time. In addition the use of parallel Imaging and processing dramatically reduces cycle time between images ensuring data collection time is kept to an absolute minimum.

Produce highest quality datasets

Optimized for molybdenum (Mo) radiation, the larger aperture and high sensitivity of the Saturn 724 HG enables collection of higher resolution data, with greater redundancy, at a given crystal-to-detector distance. The advanced full-frame CCD employed by the Saturn 724 HG uses a proprietary 2-phase architecture and has high capacity pixels for extended dynamic range. With its 18-bit analog-to-digital (ADC) processing architecture, the Saturn 724 HG is ideal for accurately measuring weak reflections.

The high sensitivity is achieved by the use of a high efficiency sensor, in which one of the two polysilicon gates was replaced with the transparent conductor indium-tin-oxide (ITO) in combination with a high efficiency scintillator. The design of the CCD chip eliminates the need to resort to backside illumination and provides the intrinsically superior dark current characteristics needed to generate the highest quality data.

  • Advanced Kodak KAF-4320E CCD sensor
  • ITO technology and high performance scintillator for superior sensitivity
  • Large 72 mm x 72 mm (97 mm diagonal) image area
  • 2084 x 2084 pixel array with 4-port readout
  • Fast 2 MHz per port (8 MHz total) readout speed
  • 5666:1 dynamic range
  • 18-bit analog-to-digital converter
  • Read out times as low as 0.24 seconds per image (binned mode)
  • Demagnification ratio of 1.46:1
  • Parallel Imaging and Processing (PIP) for reduced cycle time
  • Reliable closed loop Joule-Thompson cooling system (no water required)
  • Full sampling of reciprocal spaces with a 3-axis or 4-axis goniometer
  • Supported by CrystalClear™ and HKL-3000 R®

Publish more high-quality structures faster

For maximum throughput, the Saturn 724 HG may be equipped as a complete Saturn CCD System, using the brilliant MicroMax-007 HF microfocus rotating anode X-ray generator and the world's only sample handling automation system for small molecule crystallography, the ACTOR™ SM.
