Availability of cryogenic gaseous and liquid nitrogen are critical to many areas of technology today. Lack of availability can completely disrupt many types of operations—from semiconductor fabrication to drug discovery research. To address this problem, Rigaku has developed self-contained systems—for providing cryogenic (temperature regulated) nitrogen gas and/or liquid nitrogen—using only air, electricity, and cooling water.

Rigaku cryogenics

New technology now makes it possible to eliminate traditional approaches to cryogen delivery. Instead of inconvenient large and heavy dewars, or difficult to maintain built-in plumbing, this innovation allows liquid nitrogen (LN2) to be produced and delivered exactly where it is needed.

With costs comparable to that of commercially produced LN2, there is now no reason to accept liability associated with cryogen transport and handling. Automatically generating and delivering LN2 when and where it is needed substantially reduces risks associated with uncertain lines of supply while enhancing productivity.

This Methods paper by Jim Pflugrath is a review of cryocrystallography published in 2004 that was mentioned on the CCP4BB in February 2008. It contains references to other cryocrystallography reviews that would also be useful to read: Macromolecular cryocrystallography—methods for cooling and mounting protein crystals at cryogenic temperatures.
